In a remote village, two brothers find a demon-infected man who is about to “give birth” to evil itself. They decide to dispose of the body, only to unwittingly spread chaos. During a Q&A with the audience after the premiere at Fantastic Fest, director Demián Rugna said he got the idea for When Evil Lurks from a series of news reports about agricultural pesticides in his native Argentina causing widespread health problems. He suggests that corporate apathy about workers’ health and the way the problem occurred “in the middle of nowhere,” where it’s easy for profiteers and city dwellers to ignore the impact of their choices, led him to think about the idea of lurking evils that have been given carte blanche to spread. I liked the premise of "When Evil Lurks", I think it is an original possession story, which moves away from the usual stereotypes of this type of horror. Evil takes over the lives of Jimi and Pedro slowly and painfully. The audience witnesses this inevitable rise of darkness that repeatedly outwits the characters, despite all the precautions and strategies they apply. The director has taken a realistic approach and some elements of the story are raw and believable. There is no unnecessary violence or unnecessary jump scares. The script takes the time to delve into the backstory of Pedro and his family, making him vulnerable and relatable to the audience. The storytelling is vivid and there are many tense sequences that provide some unexpected moments. This is what made the first half great in my opinion. Unfortunately, the film starts to lose its charm halfway through. All the tension that had built up is completely gone in the second half of the film. The protagonist makes impulsive decisions that have no logic and that will cost him dearly. In my opinion, this goes against the nature of the character, who from the beginning is constantly warning others on how to kill the possessed, without contracting the curse. The ending is very dramatic and leaves things open for a possible sequel (which most likely won’t happen). Overall, I liked the overall concept of this film, but the director (who is also the screenwriter) made some decisions that prevented this film from reaching its true potential. “Where Evil Hides” could be one of the best horror films of 2023, but unfortunately it only gets a 6. It’s still a solid film, but I expected much better.
