OpenAI releases GPT-4o, a faster model thats free for all ChatGPT users

So while we might not see a search engine, OpenAI may integrate search-like technology into ChatGPT to offer live data and even sourcing for information shared by the chatbot. There are still many updates OpenAI hasn’t revealed including the next generation GPT-5 model, which could power the paid version when it launches. We also haven’t had an update on the release of the AI video model Sora or Voice Engine.

Altman has said it will be much more intelligent than previous models. “I am excited about it being smarter,” said Altman in his interview with Fridman. That stage alone could take months, it did with GPT-4 and so what is being suggested as a GPT-5 release this summer might actually be GPT-4.5 instead. After all there was a deleted blog post from OpenAI referring to GPT-4.5-Turbo leaked to Bing earlier this year. According to a press release Apple published following the June 10 presentation, Apple Intelligence will use ChatGPT-4o, which is currently the latest public version of OpenAI’s algorithm. This groundbreaking collaboration has changed the game for OpenAI by creating a way for privacy-minded users to access ChatGPT without sharing their data.

Can ChatGPT be detected?

It will be able to perform tasks in languages other than English and will have a larger context window than Llama 2. A context window reflects the range of text that the LLM can process at the time the information is generated. This implies that the model will be able to handle larger chunks of text or data within a shorter period of time when it is asked to make predictions and generate responses.

How different will GPT-5 be?

One suggestion I’ve seen floating around X and other platforms is the theory that this could be the end of the knowledge cutoff problem. This is where AI models only have information up to the end of their training— usually 3-6 months before launch. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman made it clear there will not be a search engine launched this week. This was re-iterated by the company PR team after I pushed them on the topic. However, just because they’re not launching a Google competitor doesn’t mean search won’t appear.

Beyond just the native tools and updates that GPT-4o is bringing to the table, it makes other tools to free users. These include custom chatbots and access to the ChatGPT store which has models and tools built by users. OpenAI released a new Read Aloud feature for the web version of ChatGPT as well as the iOS and Android apps. ChatGPT is easily the best-known generative AI chatbot in the world, but it offers different experiences depending on whether or not you pay for a premium LLM. The free ChatGPT runs on the GPT-3.5 model, while ChatGPT Plus and enterprise subscriptions have access to GPT-4. There’s even talk about GPT-4.5 coming out soon, with many people expecting OpenAI to launch a GPT-5 upgrade later this year. According to a Reuters report from a few weeks ago, Strawberry has more advanced capabilities than GPT-4o, which is currently the best commercial ChatGPT version. Whether GPT-4o, Advanced Voice Mode, o1/strawberry, Orion, GPT-5, or something else, OpenAI has no choice but to deliver. It can’t afford to fall behind too much, especially considering what happeend recently. Apparently, the point of o1 was, among other things, to train Orion with synthetic data. The Verge surfaced a mid-September tweet from Sam Altman that seemed to tease something big would happen in the winter. That supposedly coincided with OpenAI researchers celebrating the end of Orion’s training. Speaking of OpenAI partners, Apple integrated ChatGPT in iOS 18, though access to the chatbot is currently available only via the iOS 18.2 beta.

A chatbot can be any software/system that holds dialogue with you/a person but doesn’t necessarily have to be AI-powered. For example, there are chatbots that are rules-based in the sense that they’ll give canned responses to questions. Both the free version of ChatGPT and the paid ChatGPT Plus are regularly updated with new GPT models. And nonprofit organization Solana officially integrated the chatbot into its network with a ChatGPT plug-in geared toward end users to help onboard into the web3 space. More and more tech companies and search engines are utilizing the chatbot to automate text or quickly answer user questions/concerns.

For example, we know for a fact that GPT-4.0 is capable of creating images, vector graphics, and the voice version is capable of singing, and all of these features have been disabled by OpenAI. I’ve written many stories speculating on new features coming to the next version of iOS, a button changing on the side of a pair of headphones, or a camera update in the latest smartphone. Some features have been sitting on the sidelines or teased, particularly by OpenAI. This includes the integration of SearchGPT and the full version of its o1 reasoning model. Anthropic has however, just released a new iPad version of the Claude app and given the mobile apps a refresh — maybe in preparation for that rumored new model.

OpenAI has dropped a couple of key ChatGPT upgrades so far this year, but neither one was the big GPT-5 upgrade we’re all waiting for.
